The Promised Expectation
Last year, when I was still serving as team leader, my boss suddenly approached me for a talk, saying that due to organizational restructuring, the team was going to be disbanded. Naturally, I felt disappointed at the time, but the boss reassured me that I would be given a certain salary increase in the next annual adjustment. She said that given my current level, my salary was indeed on the low side, and a raise was reasonable and feasible.
Although the team's dissolution left me with mixed feelings, I thought about it - when it comes to work, the most realistic thing is still salary and benefits. The boss's words gave me some hope, and since I was participating in a very important project at the time, I thought working diligently couldn't be wrong, so I continued to work with peace of mind, looking forward to the salary adjustment moment.
The Gap Between Expectation and Reality
After that conversation in October last year, the boss never mentioned the salary raise again. I thought the boss would surely fulfill her promise, as I considered my work ability and attitude to be on point, and my performance evaluation should be good too.
Until late April every year, when the company routinely announces bonuses and salary adjustments. In fact, when I didn't receive a separate meeting invitation from the boss a few days earlier, I felt somewhat uneasy, but I still held onto a shred of hope, thinking maybe the boss was just too busy and hadn't had time to notify me.
When I received my salary statement at the end of the month, my fantasy was completely shattered: the promised salary raise hadn't been implemented at all, and the numbers on the salary statement remained unchanged. What made me even more upset was that the boss had no explanation or communication about this.
Workplace Reflections and Insights
After this disappointing experience, I gained some profound insights:
- Regarding workplace promises, one shouldn't be too trusting - maintain caution and rationality;
- What truly protects your rights are always clear contracts and explicit company policies, not verbal promises;
- In the future regarding salary matters, I must proactively communicate and fight for them, not passively wait for implementation.
Although the expectation of a salary raise fell through and disappointed me, it also gave me a clearer understanding of the workplace: only by steadily planning one's own career and relying on explicit institutional guarantees can I truly ensure that my efforts won't be let down.
After this incident, I started seriously thinking about my future and career planning. If there's no salary raise this time, it's foreseeable that in the next two to three years, salary increases won't have much to do with me.
I'm certain that this isn't the end of my career journey, but rather that it's time to restart and look for new development opportunities.
A New Beginning
I've decided to start utilizing AI technology to improve my skills, increase my competitiveness, and look for new opportunities to go somewhere more suitable for me where I can demonstrate my value.
